When is the best time to take probiotics?
No trial has set a best time for probiotics. The only timing study found, a lab model, found a four-microbe capsule survived best taken with or just before a meal.
No trial has established a best time of day for probiotics. The one timing study we found, a lab model of the upper gut, saw a four-microbe capsule survive best with a meal or just before one. Electric Tiger Probiotic 20 Billion CFU directs one capsule daily with 6–8 oz of water and names no time.
The one timing study
A 2011 laboratory study ran a commercial four-microbe capsule through a computer-controlled model of the stomach and upper intestine and counted what survived. Survival was best when the capsule was given with a meal or 30 minutes before one. Given 30 minutes after a meal, it did not survive in high numbers. Survival was also better with milk (1% fat) or oatmeal-milk than with apple juice or spring water, and the authors thought the fat content of the meal mattered more than the protein. They concluded that products without enteric coating are best taken with or just before a meal containing some fat. One of the four microbes, a yeast, was unaffected by timing.
The limits are large. It is a model, not people; the product had four specific strains, none of which is stated on our label; and it measured how many microbes survived, not whether anyone benefits. It is a reason to think meal timing may matter, not proof of a schedule.
What that means for our label
Our directions say one capsule daily with 6–8 oz of water, or as directed by a healthcare professional. They do not say before, with or after a meal, and the lab study found water gave lower survival than a meal for a different product. We cannot say whether the same applies to the 13 organisms on our label, because the panel prints no strain codes and the study did not test them. If you would rather follow the study, taking the capsule with a meal is consistent with it and with the label.
Morning or night, and empty stomach or not
No trial we found compared morning with night, or an empty stomach with a full one, in people. That leaves a practical answer: pick a time you will keep to, and follow the label for the product you buy, since labels differ. We make no sleep claim for this product, and nothing in the research above ties timing to the evening.
How long before anything shows up?
The trial of a named strain that we cite lasted 4 weeks and measured that strain's abundance in stool, not how anyone feels. We do not give a timeline for noticing anything, because none of the research we cite supports one for a species-only product.
Questions people ask
When is the best time to take probiotics?
With a meal, or shortly before one, is the only timing with any data behind it, and that data is from a lab model. See above for the limits.
Should I take probiotics on an empty stomach?
The lab study did not test an empty stomach. It tested meals and drinks, and found water and juice gave worse survival than a fat-containing meal. Check your product's own directions; ours says to take the capsule with 6–8 oz of water.
Do probiotics break a fast?
Our Supplement Facts panel lists no calories or macronutrients, and the capsule contains cellulose and brown rice flour. Whether that breaks your fast depends on the rules you follow for it.
Is it okay to take probiotics at night, or morning versus night?
No study we found compared them. Take it when you will take it consistently.
When should I take probiotics with antibiotics, or after them?
Antibiotics kill bacteria, and probiotic capsules contain bacteria, so ask the prescriber or a pharmacist how to time them. We cover it in probiotics and medications: what to check.
How fast do probiotics work?
See the section above: no verified timeline for a general species-only product.
