How to choose a good DIM (diindolylmethane)
Choosing a DIM product means checking the actual milligram amount of DIM (not just capsule weight), whether it uses an absorption-enhancing formulation, how that dose compares with what's been studied, what else is in the capsule, price per serving, and whether testing is backed by an actual certificate of analysis.
Choosing a DIM product comes down to reading past the front-of-label claim and checking a few specific things: the actual milligram amount of DIM, whether the formulation addresses DIM's poor absorption on its own, how that dose sits against what's actually been studied, what else is in the capsule, and the price per serving rather than per bottle.
The milligram amount of DIM, not just the capsule
Check the supplement facts panel for the specific milligram amount of DIM itself. Some labels state the weight of a proprietary blend or capsule rather than the DIM content specifically, which makes it hard to know how much of the active compound you're actually getting, or to compare two products fairly.
Absorption-enhanced or plain
DIM doesn't absorb well on its own in its plain form, which is part of why many commercial products use some form of absorption enhancement — a micronized particle size, an emulsified or oil-based delivery, or a paired ingredient like black pepper extract. A 2021 pharmacokinetics study used exactly this kind of formulation and confirmed real DIM and metabolite levels in blood and urine at about 90.6 mg a day (PMID 34035125). That's evidence for that specific formulation type reaching the bloodstream — it isn't a claim that every DIM product, including plain, non-enhanced versions, does the same at the same dose. If a label doesn't say anything about how it addresses absorption, that's worth asking about.
Dose against what's actually been studied
Human trials of DIM have used doses from about 75 mg to 450 mg a day, but most of that research measured lab or tissue markers in specific hormone-related research populations — not in a general population, and not to establish a standard dose for general use. See how much DIM should you take a day? and DIM benefits: what the research does and doesn't show for the specific numbers and what each trial actually measured. A bigger number on a label isn't evidence of a better-researched or more effective product.
What else is in the capsule
Check the "other ingredients" line for fillers, flow agents, and the capsule shell material — some capsules are gelatin (not vegan or vegetarian) even when the front label doesn't say so clearly. DIM is also commonly sold in combination products, paired with other ingredients under a branded blend name; a blend name doesn't tell you the amount of DIM specifically, so check the panel, not the marketing name.
Price per serving
Because milligram amounts per capsule vary from around 100 mg to over 400 mg across different products, price per bottle tells you very little on its own. Divide the price by the number of servings, and note the milligram amount of DIM per serving, so you're comparing two products on the same basis.
Third-party testing
A certificate of analysis (COA) confirms a specific batch was independently tested for identity and contaminants. "Third-party tested" only means something when a batch has a linked, available COA to go with it — a claim on the label with no way to check it isn't the same thing.
Questions people ask
Where can I buy DIM supplement?
DIM is widely sold through supplement retailers, pharmacies, and online stores. This page doesn't recommend a specific seller — the checks above (milligram amount, absorption formulation, dose context, fillers, price per serving, testing) apply no matter where you buy it.
Which DIM supplement is best, or top rated?
"Best" and "top rated" aren't research categories — no trial has compared branded DIM products against each other. Use the checklist above to evaluate any specific product on its own label facts rather than a rating or review count.
Which DIM brand should I trust?
No single brand has research specifically behind it beyond the formulation types covered in this file (plain versus absorption-enhanced). Evaluate any product on the label facts above — milligram amount, formulation type, dose, fillers, price per serving, and testing — rather than a brand name alone.
