Ashwagandha and vitamin B6: is there a tested combination?

No trial has tested ashwagandha combined with vitamin B6. B6 shows up in some multi-ingredient stress blends for its own reasons, not because it's been shown to change what ashwagandha does.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

No clinical trial has tested ashwagandha combined with vitamin B6. Some "stress support" and mood-focused products pair the two because B6 is involved in neurotransmitter synthesis, but that's a formulation choice, not a tested combination — and it's also why some buyers specifically look for an ashwagandha product without added B6.

What the evidence doesn't support

It doesn't support a claim that ashwagandha plus B6 does more than ashwagandha alone, or than B6 alone — no trial has tested the pairing, in any dose or form. It also doesn't support taking extra B6 as a way to enhance whatever ashwagandha does; B6's role in supplements formulated this way is generally about the blend's other ingredients, not about ashwagandha specifically.

Why some people look for ashwagandha without B6

Vitamin B6 has a tolerable upper intake level set by the National Institutes of Health's Office of Dietary Supplements — 100 mg a day for adults from supplements — because sustained high intakes have been linked to nerve-related symptoms in case reports. Most standalone ashwagandha capsules don't contain B6 at all; it typically shows up in multi-ingredient "stress," "mood," or "energy" blends that combine several vitamins with an herbal ingredient. Someone already taking a multivitamin or B-complex, or who has developed nerve symptoms in the past, may reasonably want an ashwagandha product without an added B6 dose stacking on top of what they're already getting elsewhere. Checking the total B6 across every supplement you take — not just one product — against that upper limit is the relevant math, not whether any single ashwagandha product happens to include it.

Questions people ask

Does ashwagandha contain vitamin B6?

No — ashwagandha root itself isn't a meaningful source of B6. Any B6 in a product labeled "ashwagandha" comes from an added ingredient in the formula, not from the ashwagandha itself.

Do I need B6 with ashwagandha?

No trial supports adding B6 to get more out of ashwagandha, so there's no research-based reason to seek it out or avoid it on ashwagandha's account specifically. If you're already meeting your B6 needs through diet or another supplement, an additional dose from an ashwagandha blend is simply extra B6 to account for against the daily upper limit.

When to talk to a doctor

If you've had nerve symptoms — tingling, numbness, or loss of coordination — that you suspect are related to a supplement, stop it and see a doctor rather than trying to self-diagnose which ingredient is responsible. Ask a doctor before combining multiple supplements if you're pregnant, nursing, under 18, or take medication.
