Guide
When is the best time to take CoQ10?
No trial we found settles morning vs night or with vs without food for CoQ10. This guide gives our label's directions and what formulation studies do show.
We found no human trial that shows morning, night, or with-food is the best time to take CoQ10, so we can't name one. Our label directs one capsule once a day, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal, or as your healthcare professional directs. Pick a time you will keep to, and follow the directions on your product.
What our label says, and what we could not find
Electric Tiger CoQ10 200 mg directs: take one capsule once a day, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal, or as directed by your healthcare professional. That is the supplier's wording, and we print it as written.
We looked for a human study comparing CoQ10 taken fasted, with food, or at different times of day, for ubiquinone or ubiquinol, and did not find one. That means we can't say "before a meal" improves absorption, and we can't say taking it with food does either. We make no timing claim.
What is known: formulation changes how much gets into the blood
CoQ10 is fat-soluble, meaning it dissolves in oil rather than water. The absorption studies we read compared formulations, not meal timing. In a crossover of 10 healthy adults given 100 mg in four formulations, a soybean-oil softgel had the highest bioavailability, and a hard capsule of powder was one of the comparators (Weis 1994). In 54 healthy adults taking 60 mg a day for 14 days, a solubilised form raised blood levels more than crystalline or oily forms, though the main differences between products were not statistically significant (Schulz 2006).
Our capsule is plain powder with rice flour and no oil, and we have no absorption data on it. So the formulation studies do not tell us what timing would do for it.
Questions people ask
When is the best time to take CoQ10, and what time of day should I take it?
No trial we found settles it. Our label says once a day, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal. Whichever time you choose, taking it at the same time daily makes it easier to remember.
Should I take CoQ10 in the morning or at night? Can I take it at night?
We found no study comparing the two. We make no claim that CoQ10 affects sleep or energy, so we don't advise either time for that reason. If you notice it disagrees with you at some time of day, move it and ask a pharmacist.
Should CoQ10 be taken with food, or on an empty stomach?
Our supplier's directions say before a meal. We found no trial that tests either for CoQ10, so follow your product's label or your clinician's advice.
Does CoQ10 break a fast?
Our Supplement Facts panel lists no calorie line, and we have no data to say how any fasting protocol treats it. If you fast for a medical reason, ask your clinician.
When should I take CoQ10 with a prescription medicine?
We give no timing advice for use alongside a prescription, including statins such as rosuvastatin. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist; see CoQ10 and medications.
How fast does CoQ10 work?
We can't give a time. The trials we cite measured outcomes over days to weeks, at 60 to 300 mg a day, and not at our dose. See what the research does and doesn't show.
Which form or brand is best absorbed?
The two small trials comparing ubiquinone and ubiquinol measured blood levels only and disagree (Langsjoen 2014, Pravst 2020), so we name no winner. See how to choose a good CoQ10, and how much to take.

- Bioavailability of four oral coenzyme Q10 formulations in healthy volunteers In 10 healthy adults, 100 mg CoQ10 in a soybean-oil softgel was absorbed best of four formulations; a powder capsule was one comparator.
- Comparison of the relative bioavailability of different coenzyme Q10 formulations with a novel solubilizate (Solu Q10) In 54 healthy adults taking 60 mg a day for 14 days, a solubilised CoQ10 raised blood levels more than crystalline or oily forms, though the main differences were not statistically significant.
- Comparison study of plasma coenzyme Q10 levels in healthy subjects supplemented with ubiquinol versus ubiquinone In 12 healthy adults, 200 mg a day of ubiquinol for 4 weeks raised blood CoQ10 more than 200 mg of ubiquinone in the same softgel.
- Comparative Bioavailability of Different Coenzyme Q10 Formulations in Healthy Elderly Individuals In 21 healthy older adults, a single 100 mg dose of water-soluble CoQ10 syrup was absorbed 2.4 times as well as ubiquinone capsules; ubiquinol capsules were not significantly different.
