How to choose a good sea moss

A checklist for choosing a sea moss supplement, with our own label scored against it, including where it falls short.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

To choose a good sea moss supplement, check six things: the species named (Chondrus crispus for Irish moss), the form, an amount for every ingredient, a lab-backed iodine figure, a certificate of analysis for metals, and no claims the trials do not support. Our own label is scored below; it falls short on two.

The checklist for choosing a sea moss supplement

  1. Species. "Sea moss" is a trade name. Irish moss is Chondrus crispus; other products are often Eucheuma or Gracilaria. A label that names no species leaves you guessing. See what is sea moss.
  2. Form. Whole dried seaweed, extract, powder, gel or gummy. They are not interchangeable by weight; gel is mostly water and gummies add sugar and other ingredients.
  3. Amount of each ingredient. A proprietary blend that gives one total hides how much seaweed you are getting. Look for a milligram figure per ingredient per serving.
  4. Iodine. A lab survey of 96 seaweed products found iodine per daily dose of supplements from 5 to 5,600 mcg, with labels for species and iodine often inadequate or inaccurate (PMID 33889064). A stated, tested iodine figure lets you add up your total against the 1,100 mcg adult upper level.
  5. Metals testing. Seaweed can contain arsenic, cadmium and lead from seawater; in 14 edible seaweeds they reached 67.6, 7.2 and 6.7 mg/kg dry weight, varying widely by species (PMID 26817952). Ask for a certificate of analysis. "Organic" does not address it.
  6. Claims versus trials. No human trial of whole Irish moss exists that we found, so any "detox", thyroid or immune claim, or a "92 minerals" figure with no source, is not backed by a trial of the plant. See sea moss benefits: what the research does and doesn't show.
  7. Other ingredients. Check capsule material, sweeteners in gummies and fruit in gels, plus any extra herbs. Each carries its own cautions.
  8. Price per serving. Compare cost per serving at the same seaweed amount, not per bottle or per jar.

The two shortfalls matter if you have a thyroid condition or want a metals result in hand. Our label prints "organic" in the ingredient names as the panel does; we show no certifier seal. The product page is here.

Questions people ask

Which sea moss supplement or brand should I choose?

We do not rank products, and no trial does either. Use the checklist: species, form, per-ingredient amounts, an iodine figure and a metals certificate matter more than any marketing term.

Which sea moss suits me?

It depends on your situation. If you have a thyroid condition, take thyroid medicine or are pregnant, ask a doctor before any seaweed supplement; see who should not take sea moss.

Which sea moss gel should I choose?

Gel varies by species, water content and added fruit or sweetener. Look for the species name, a stated seaweed-to-water ratio and an iodine figure. We do not rank brands here.

Gummies or capsules?

Check the amount of sea moss per gummy or capsule, the sugar in gummies, and the iodine. Capsules at least state a milligram amount; gummies often bury it.

Which flavour should I pick?

Flavoured gels add fruit, juice or sweetener, which changes the recipe, not the seaweed. Read the ingredient list for what was added.

Where do I buy sea moss, and what about reviews?

It is sold as raw dried seaweed, gel, powder, gummies and capsules. Reviews on a seller's site are anecdotes, not evidence about iodine or metals; we do not use them as evidence. A certificate of analysis is a better test than a star rating.

When should I take sea moss?

No time of day is proven. Our directions are before a meal; see when to take sea moss.
