When is the best time to take lion's mane?

No trial has compared times of day for lion's mane. Our label says two capsules daily, with food or on an empty stomach.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

No study has tested what time of day is best for lion's mane, so no time is better supported than another. Our label allows two capsules daily with food or on an empty stomach. Pick a time you can repeat, and take it with food if an empty stomach upsets yours.

What the research says about timing

None of the trials we found compared morning with evening, or food with an empty stomach. The acute studies measured people 60 minutes (PMID 38004235) and 90 minutes (PMID 40276537) after one dose. Those are the times the researchers chose to test, not times anyone showed to be better to take it. The longer trials gave it daily for 4 weeks without a stated time of day in their abstracts.

With food or on an empty stomach

The label for Lion's Mane Mushroom says two capsules daily, with food or on an empty stomach, as low as $18.23 a bottle on subscription. Because stomach discomfort is among the side effects people report (PMID 40959699), taking it with a meal is a reasonable way to start. That is a practical suggestion, not a finding: no trial compared the two.

Questions people ask

When should I take a lion's mane supplement?

Whenever you will remember it, at the same time each day. We have no evidence that morning, midday or evening is better, and we make no claim about what it does at any hour.

Will lion's mane keep you awake at night?

We found no study showing that it does, and our capsules contain no caffeine or other stimulant (the label lists the mushroom powder, a pullulan capsule and pea starch). We also found no study designed to answer the question, so we cannot say it never happens. If you notice a change in your sleep after starting any supplement, try taking it earlier in the day, and tell your doctor if it continues. Our product makes no claim about sleep or alertness.

When should I take lion's mane powder, and what about an empty stomach?

The same applies to powder: no timing study exists. If an empty stomach upsets you, take it with food. Powder amounts differ by product, so use your label.

When do you eat lion's mane, and when is it grown?

Fresh lion's mane is a culinary mushroom and can be eaten at any meal. Growing timing depends on the kit or the grower's setup, so follow the supplier's instructions; we make capsules, not grow kits.

Make it a routine, not a schedule

Because the evidence cannot rank times, consistency is the only sensible rule. Link the capsules to something you already do, such as breakfast, and keep to the label amount. Taking it with food also makes it easier to notice whether a meal or the capsules are behind any stomach upset. If you start another supplement at the same time, change one thing at a time so you know which is responsible for any change. Our directions say two capsules daily; do not add more to compensate for a missed day.
