Berberine and B12: taking them together

We haven't found a study that tested berberine and vitamin B12 together, or one that measured berberine's effect on B12 levels. Here's what each one is, why people ask, and what's involved in taking them at the same time.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

We haven't found a trial that tested berberine and vitamin B12 together, or any research measuring what berberine does to B12 levels or absorption. Electric Tiger Berberine is single-ingredient — 800 mg of berberine HCl extract, about 73 mg of berberine, per two-capsule serving — and doesn't contain B12. Nothing below suggests a reason not to take a B12 supplement alongside it, but that's an absence of a documented problem, not a tested combination.

Is there a documented interaction between berberine and B12?

Not that we've found. Berberine's known drug and supplement interactions are described in the review behind our own label warning — mainly effects on liver enzymes that process certain medications, and an additive effect with medications that lower blood sugar. Vitamin B12 doesn't appear in that literature, and we haven't found a separate study testing whether berberine changes how much B12 the body absorbs or holds onto. See berberine and medications: what to check for what is documented.

Why the question comes up

B12 supplements and metabolic-support supplements like berberine often end up in the same daily stack, since both get marketed around energy and metabolism. That's a reason people ask whether to take them together, not evidence that one affects the other. Vitamin B12 itself supports red blood cell formation and nerve function; a deficiency is most often linked to age, a vegan or vegetarian diet, or a digestive condition or surgery that affects absorption, not to taking berberine.

The dose gap, if you're combining for a shared goal

Berberine's own trial base uses 900 mg to 1,500 mg of berberine a day, most commonly for one to three months, in a 50-study, 4,150-person meta-analysis. Electric Tiger Berberine's serving is about 73 mg — roughly a twelfth to a twentieth of that range. See how much berberine should you take? for the full picture on our dose against the research.

Taking them together

Our label directs two capsules a day with 6–8 oz of water. A B12 supplement's own directions — whether it's a tablet, sublingual or injection — come from its own label, not from berberine's. We haven't found a reason the two need to be spaced apart or taken at a particular time relative to each other.

Questions people ask

Does berberine deplete vitamin B12?

We haven't found a study that tested this. There's no research measuring berberine's effect on B12 status one way or the other.

Can I take berberine and B12 together?

We haven't found a documented interaction, but we also haven't found a trial testing the combination directly. Electric Tiger Berberine doesn't contain B12.

Does B12 help berberine work better?

No research supports that. B12 and berberine are studied separately, for separate purposes, and nothing in either literature shows one changing what the other does.
