Research review

Does berberine help with anxiety? What the research does and doesn't show

No human trial has tested berberine for anxiety, in either direction. The only research connecting the two is a single 2025 rat study in an induced-colitis model, not a finding about people.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

The evidence doesn't support berberine as a treatment for anxiety, and it doesn't support the idea that berberine causes anxiety either. No human trial has tested berberine for anxiety in any population. The one study connecting the two was conducted in rats with chemically induced colitis, not people, and berberine's documented human side effects are gastrointestinal, not psychological.

What the evidence doesn't support

It doesn't support berberine as a treatment for anxiety, panic attacks, generalized anxiety disorder, or any other anxiety-related diagnosis. No human trial has given people berberine and measured anxiety as an outcome, in a general population or in people already diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. It also doesn't support the reverse claim — that taking berberine causes or worsens anxiety. Neither direction has been tested in people.

What the trials found

The only research connecting berberine to anxiety is a single 2025 study in rats, not people. Researchers induced acute colitis in 32 male rats using intrarectal acetic acid, then gave them oral berberine (50 or 100 mg/kg), a comparison anti-inflammatory drug, or saline for seven days. Anxiety-like behavior — a standard rodent behavioral measure, not a human diagnosis or self-report — decreased in a dose-dependent way in the berberine groups, alongside improvements in markers of colon inflammation. That's a finding about inflamed rats at a dose calculated per kilogram of body weight, in a model of intestinal disease, not a finding about anxiety in a healthy person taking a supplement. No human trial has tested whether anything similar happens in people, with or without a gut condition.

Separately, human safety data on berberine — drawn from trials studying it for blood sugar and cholesterol at 900 mg to 1.5 g a day — report gastrointestinal side effects (diarrhea, cramping, nausea) as the main documented issue. A 2026 review of berberine's drug interactions and safety profile doesn't list anxiety, mood changes, or any psychological symptom among its documented effects.

Questions people ask

Can berberine cause anxiety?

No human trial or safety review has reported anxiety as a side effect of berberine. The documented side effects are gastrointestinal — diarrhea, cramping and nausea, most often at doses of 1.5 g a day or higher.

Does berberine cause anxiety?

There's no documented case of this in the human research reviewed here. If you notice new anxiety symptoms after starting any supplement, that's worth mentioning to a doctor, since it could relate to something else entirely.

Does berberine help with anxiety?

No human trial has tested that. The single study connecting berberine to anxiety-like behavior was conducted in rats with an induced gut condition, not in people, and it doesn't establish an effect in humans.

When to talk to a doctor

Anxiety that interferes with daily life, sleep or work is worth raising with a doctor. Berberine is not a treatment for anxiety or any anxiety disorder, and nothing in the evidence above supports using it as a substitute for an evaluation, therapy or medication a doctor might recommend. If you take medication for anxiety or any other condition, or are pregnant or nursing, talk to a doctor before adding any supplement.
