Fish oil and vitamin K2

Fish oil and vitamin K2 are sometimes paired in combined-nutrient products, but plain fish oil concentrate doesn't naturally contain K2 — they're two different fat-soluble nutrients.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

No — plain fish oil concentrate doesn't naturally contain vitamin K2. Fish oil supplies EPA and DHA, two omega-3 fatty acids; vitamin K2 is a fat-soluble vitamin found mainly in fermented foods and certain animal fats, not in fish body oil. Some combined products pair the two — along with vitamin D3, and sometimes MCT oil — in one softgel, but that's a formulation choice, not something fish oil naturally provides on its own.

What each actually is

Fish oil is a fat extracted and concentrated from fish like sardines and anchovies; our softgel supplies 180 mg of EPA and 120 mg of DHA from 1,000 mg of fish oil concentrate. Vitamin K2 is a fat-soluble vitamin, distinct from vitamin K1 (found in leafy greens), sourced mainly from fermented foods like natto and certain aged cheeses, and some animal fats. They're chemically unrelated — a fat used as an energy and structural nutrient versus a vitamin the body needs in small amounts for specific processes.

Does fish oil have K2 in it?

No. Our panel lists fish oil concentrate, EPA, DHA and vitamin E — no vitamin K2, D3 or MCT oil. Search interest around "omega-3 D3 K2" or "D3 K2 omega-3 MCT oil" generally points to combined multi-nutrient products on the market; we don't sell one. A plain fish oil concentrate, like ours, doesn't carry K2 unless a brand specifically formulates it in.

What actually matters if you're taking both

  • Timing. Both are fat-based or fat-soluble, so both are commonly taken with a meal that includes some dietary fat, per the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. That's a shared practical tip, not a sign the two need to be taken at the same time specifically.
  • Dose independence. The amount of K2 you take doesn't change how much EPA or DHA you absorb from fish oil, or the reverse.
  • Checking a combined product's label. If a product bundles omega-3s with D3, K2 and MCT oil, check the amount of each against what you're separately taking, so you don't unintentionally double up.

Questions people ask

Can you take fish oil and vitamin K2 together?

Yes. There's no documented interaction between fish oil and vitamin K2 at typical supplement doses.

Does fish oil have vitamin D3 and K2 in it?

Not ours. Plain fish oil concentrate doesn't naturally carry either. Cod liver oil is a different product that does naturally carry vitamin D (see fish oil and vitamin D), but even cod liver oil doesn't naturally supply K2.

Why do some fish oil products include K2 and D3?

It's a formulation choice some brands make to combine several fat-soluble nutrients in one softgel. Ours doesn't — it's fish oil concentrate only, so anyone wanting D3 or K2 needs a separate product or one that specifically lists them.
