When is the best time to take forskolin (Coleus forskohlii)?

No trial has compared morning and evening dosing for forskolin. The two existing human trials both split the daily amount into two doses a day, without specifying a particular time of day or relation to meals in their published methods.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

No trial has directly compared taking forskolin in the morning against the evening. What the research shows instead is that the two existing human trials both split the daily amount into two doses a day — because that's the protocol they tested, not because morning-versus-evening timing was tested against each other.

What the trials actually did

Both placebo-controlled human trials on forskolin and body composition — one in 30 overweight or obese men, one in mildly overweight women — used the identical schedule: 250 mg of a 10%-standardized extract, twice a day, for 12 weeks. Neither published abstract specifies a particular clock time or a relationship to meals (PMID 16129715, PMID 18500958). That's a study-design detail we don't have visibility into beyond "twice daily" — it isn't evidence that any specific time of day changes the result.

With or without food

Neither trial we reviewed tested forskolin with versus without food as its own variable, so there's no research-backed answer either way. Some people report stomach upset from forskolin on an empty stomach; taking it with food is a reasonable, low-risk adjustment if that happens, though it isn't something a trial specifically confirmed helps.

Splitting the dose

Both trials used a twice-a-day schedule rather than one larger single dose, which is the only timing pattern that's actually been tested in a placebo-controlled human trial. There's no research comparing that against taking the same total amount once a day.

Questions people ask

When should I take forskolin?

The only two placebo-controlled trials split it into two doses a day, without specifying morning, evening, or a relationship to meals. There's no research showing a specific time of day works better than another.

Can you take forskolin at night?

Nothing in the trials reviewed here tested evening dosing specifically or found a problem with it. Since neither trial specified a clock time, there's no research basis to say night dosing is better or worse than any other time.

Should I take forskolin before or after a workout?

Neither existing trial timed dosing around exercise, so there's no research-backed answer for pre- or post-workout timing specifically.

How fast does forskolin work?

The body-composition trials measured outcomes at 12 weeks, not sooner, so they don't tell us anything about an onset time within a day or a week. See forskolin benefits: what the research does and doesn't show for what those 12-week results actually found.
