How much hyssop should you take a day?

No health authority sets a hyssop dose, and only one human trial has tested a specific amount — 12 g of extract a day, as syrup, for a diagnosed respiratory condition.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

There's no established daily dose of hyssop for general use — no health authority sets one, and outside a single asthma trial, no research has tested a specific amount in people. The one human trial that exists used 12 g of concentrated extract a day, in syrup form, for a diagnosed respiratory condition, which is a different question from how much dried herb or tea is reasonable.

Why there's no number to give

A "dosage" only exists for a use that's actually been measured. For hyssop, the sole human data point is a 2024 trial that gave 60 adults with asthma either a hyssop syrup (5 mL twice daily, containing 6 g of Hyssopus officinalis extract per dose — 12 g total a day) or a placebo syrup, for 4 weeks, alongside their usual asthma treatment. That's a specific extract, in a specific form, at a specific total amount, tested for a specific condition — it isn't a general-purpose serving size, and nothing establishes what a lower or different amount would do, or whether it would do anything at all outside that use. See hyssop benefits: what the research does and doesn't show for what that trial actually found.

Dried herb, extract, and essential oil are not interchangeable amounts

These three forms aren't different concentrations of the same thing you can convert between:

  • Dried herb (tea, cooking) — used the way other culinary herbs are, in small pinches or a teaspoon or so per cup of tea. This is the food-use amount the FDA's "generally recognized as safe" spice listing covers (21 CFR 182.10), and it hasn't been separately tested at any specific dose in a trial.
  • Extract or capsule — a concentrated form. Commercial hyssop capsules on the market are commonly sold around 400-500 mg per capsule, which is a manufacturer's serving size, not a figure derived from research.
  • Essential oil — far more concentrated again, and not something to take by the same kind of dose reasoning at all. It's distilled to concentrate pinocamphone and isopinocamphone, compounds identified as convulsive agents when hyssop oil is taken internally. There's no oral dose of hyssop essential oil this article can responsibly describe — see who should not take hyssop.

If you're searching about the plant, not the supplement

A lot of what people search alongside "how much hyssop" is about growing it — how much water it needs, how much space to give it, how far it spreads. That's a gardening question this page doesn't answer; it's about how much of the herb to take, not how much to plant.

Questions people ask

How much hyssop should I take?

There's no dose established for general use. The only figure from research is 12 g of extract a day, in syrup form, tested specifically in people with asthma over 4 weeks — not a number to generalize from.

How much hyssop is too much?

No upper limit has been set for the dried herb or an extract, because no trial has tested a range of doses to find one. That's a gap in the research, not a green light — the previous section covers who has more reason to be cautious. The essential oil is a separate matter: animal research has recorded convulsions and death at specific oral doses of the concentrated oil, which is one reason it isn't taken internally by dose at all.

Is there a specific amount of hyssop tea per day?

No trial has tested hyssop tea at any specific amount. Traditional preparation uses it the way other culinary mint-family herbs are used — a small quantity per cup — but that's a food-use custom, not a researched dose.
