Research review
Can acai cause acne? What the evidence does and doesn't show
No published trial or case series has tested acai against acne, whether it causes it or helps clear it. The nearest related research is a preclinical review of acai by-products in topical formulations, which doesn't address acne specifically.
The evidence doesn't support a link between acai and acne, in either direction — no published trial or case series has tested whether eating or supplementing with acai causes, worsens or clears up acne. What exists is unrelated lab research on acai's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, not a study of acne itself.
What the evidence doesn't support
It doesn't support acai causing acne — no case series or trial has linked acai consumption to breakouts specifically. It also doesn't support acai as a remedy for acne, whether eaten or applied to skin; that hasn't been tested either. Diet and acne is a broader area where some other foods have been studied more directly, but that's a separate body of research from acai and outside what this page covers.
What the trials found
No trial has studied acai and acne, in food, juice, capsule or topical form. The nearest related research is a 2025 narrative review of acai by-products — seeds, fiber, oil and similar processing leftovers — in topical cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations (covered in full in acai oil and topical uses). It described preclinical, lab-based evidence for antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in isolated compounds from these by-products — a chemical property measured outside the body, not a tested effect on a skin condition like acne. The review's own authors noted limited research on finished topical products generally, and none specific to acne.
That leaves the actual "can it cause acne" question genuinely unanswered rather than answered no. An absence of research isn't the same as a clean bill of health; it means nobody has looked, in either direction, at whether acai in any form affects acne.
Questions people ask
Can acai cause acne?
No published research supports that. No trial or case series has linked eating or supplementing with acai to acne breakouts.
Does acai help clear acne?
No. Nothing in the published research tests acai, in any form, against acne as an outcome.
Is acai oil good for acne-prone skin?
No human trial has tested acai oil on acne-prone skin specifically. The available research on acai oil is preclinical and focused on its fatty-acid composition, not a tested skin outcome — see acai oil and topical uses for what it does and doesn't cover.
Can acai cause a skin reaction that looks like acne?
A fruit allergy or sensitivity can cause skin symptoms like hives, itching or a rash, which is a different thing from acne and isn't specific to acai — the same general food-allergy caution applies to introducing any new fruit. See who should not take acai for that caution in full. That's distinct from the "does acai cause acne" question above, which the published research doesn't address either way.
When to talk to a doctor
Persistent or severe acne is worth discussing with a dermatologist, who can identify an actual cause and recommend a treatment with evidence behind it. Acai is not a documented cause of, or treatment for, acne, and nothing here supports using or avoiding it based on a skin concern.
