Beetroot and zinc: does one contain the other?

Beetroot is a low-zinc food. USDA data puts raw beetroot at about 0.35 mg of zinc per 100 g, a small fraction of the 8-11 mg most adults need daily — zinc comes mainly from meat, shellfish, legumes and seeds, not root vegetables.

Beetroot is a low-zinc food. USDA FoodData Central lists raw beetroot at roughly 0.35 mg of zinc per 100 g — a small fraction of the 8-11 mg most adults need in a day. If zinc is what you're after, beetroot isn't a meaningful way to get it.

How much zinc is actually in beetroot

Per USDA FoodData Central, 100 g of raw beetroot (roughly two-thirds of a medium beet) provides about 0.35 mg of zinc. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements sets the adult Recommended Dietary Allowance for zinc at 11 mg a day for men and 8 mg a day for women. At 0.35 mg per 100 g, you'd need to eat well over a kilogram of raw beets to approach a day's target from beetroot alone — not a realistic or typical way to meet it. Foods more commonly relied on for zinc are meat, shellfish (oysters are unusually concentrated), poultry, legumes, and pumpkin or other seeds.

Why the two get searched together

Beetroot and zinc show up in the same searches mostly because both are marketed in general "energy and performance" supplement categories, and some multi-ingredient products bundle a nitrate source like beetroot with a mineral like zinc in one formula. That's a product-formulation choice, not evidence that the two do anything together — no published trial has tested beetroot and zinc as a combination, so there's nothing to report about a combined effect one way or the other.

If you're taking Electric Tiger Beetroot

Electric Tiger Beetroot is 1,300 mg of whole organic beetroot powder per two-capsule serving — one ingredient, and it doesn't include zinc or any other added mineral. If you're specifically looking to cover a zinc target, that's a separate consideration from a beetroot supplement, and the label facts above (zinc content of the vegetable itself) apply to raw beetroot, not to our capsule's exact nutrient panel, which lists only beetroot powder. 1,300 mg of dried powder is also a small mass next to the 100 g raw-weight figure USDA measures, so whatever trace zinc beetroot does contain scales down further in a capsule-sized serving.

What actually moves the needle on zinc intake

If zinc intake is the goal, USDA data puts oysters, beef, crab and fortified breakfast cereals near the top of common food sources, with pumpkin seeds, lentils and chickpeas as plant-based options that contribute meaningfully more per serving than a root vegetable like beetroot. A beetroot supplement doesn't change that picture — it's formulated and sold for its own ingredient, not as a zinc source.

Questions people ask

Does beetroot have zinc?

A small amount — about 0.35 mg per 100 g raw, per USDA data. That's not enough to count on beetroot as a meaningful zinc source next to foods like meat, shellfish or legumes.

Can I take beetroot and zinc together?

There's no documented interaction between the two, and no trial has tested them together specifically. People commonly take separate supplements for separate reasons without an established problem doing so, but that's different from evidence that combining them does more than either alone.

Is beetroot a good source of minerals in general?

Beetroot does provide some potassium and manganese in more meaningful amounts than zinc — see beetroot and potassium for those numbers specifically.
