Can you take berberine and ashwagandha together?

No trial has tested berberine and ashwagandha taken together. Here's what's documented about each separately, and what combining two supplements with their own interaction profiles involves.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

No published trial has tested berberine and ashwagandha taken together. They're studied for different things — berberine mainly for blood sugar and lipid markers, ashwagandha mainly for stress and cortisol — at different doses, in different populations, and nobody has combined them in a controlled trial. What follows is what's separately documented about each, not a tested combination.

What the evidence doesn't support

It doesn't support a claim that berberine and ashwagandha work better, or work at all, in combination — that pairing has never been studied. It doesn't support treating the two as interchangeable; they're different classes of compound studied for different outcomes. See berberine vs ashwagandha: what the research does and doesn't show for how their separate evidence bases compare. And it doesn't support using either ingredient as a treatment for a diagnosed condition, on its own or combined.

What the trials found

Because no trial has combined the two, there's no dose, population or duration to report for the pairing itself. Berberine's research and ashwagandha's research each stand on their own — see berberine benefits: what's established and what isn't and berberine vs ashwagandha for what each has shown separately, at what doses, and where the evidence is thin.

What is documented, separately, is each ingredient's own interaction and caution profile. Berberine affects several liver enzymes and drug transporters (CYP3A4, CYP2D6, CYP2C9, P-glycoprotein and others) and can add to the effect of medications that lower blood sugar, per a 2026 review of its interaction mechanisms. Ashwagandha carries its own separate cautions, including with thyroid medication and in pregnancy, that aren't addressed by anything berberine's literature covers. Combining two supplements each with their own interaction profile is a reason to mention the full combination to a doctor or pharmacist, rather than checking each one individually and assuming the sum is fine.

Questions people ask

Can you take berberine and ashwagandha together?

No trial has tested it, and we haven't found a documented case of a problem from combining them. "Untested together" isn't the same claim as "confirmed safe together" — if you take a prescription medication, mention both supplements to a doctor or pharmacist before combining them, given each ingredient's own separate interaction profile.

Can you take ashwagandha and berberine together for weight loss?

Neither ingredient has trial evidence supporting weight loss at the doses typically sold, and no trial has tested the combination for that or any other outcome. See berberine and weight: what the research does and doesn't show for what berberine's own research does and doesn't establish on that specific question.

Is it safe to take berberine and ashwagandha at the same time?

Nothing in either ingredient's separate literature documents a specific problem with combining them, but that's an absence of a documented issue, not a tested-and-cleared combination. Ashwagandha in particular should be discussed with a doctor if you're pregnant or nursing, have a thyroid condition, or take other medication — cautions that exist independent of berberine.

When to talk to a doctor

Neither berberine nor ashwagandha is a treatment for a diagnosed metabolic or stress-related condition, and nothing above supports using either, alone or combined, as a substitute for medical care. If you're managing blood sugar, thyroid function, or take a prescription medication, bring the full list of what you're taking — including both of these — to a doctor or pharmacist before starting either.
