Berberine and ginger: taking them together

Berberine and ginger are sometimes combined informally, but no published research has tested the pairing itself. Electric Tiger Berberine is single-ingredient and doesn't contain ginger.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

No trial has tested berberine and ginger taken together, and Electric Tiger Berberine is a single-ingredient product that doesn't contain ginger. The two are sometimes combined informally — in tea, capsules or homemade preparations — but no published research has measured the combination itself, only what each ingredient has been studied for on its own.

Why people combine them

Ginger and berberine are both plant-derived compounds with long histories in traditional use, and both show up in metabolic-health and digestive-comfort routines. Some people also stir ground ginger into a drink alongside a berberine capsule's contents, following home recipes that circulate online — that's a preparation choice, not something any study has evaluated for effect or safety. Commercially, the two are more often sold as separate single-ingredient products than combined into one formula, which is one reason a combination trial is unlikely to exist: there's less commercial pressure to study a pairing nobody is selling as a single product.

What each ingredient's own research covers

Ginger's own human research is broader than berberine's, and it's covered separately in ginger benefits: what the research does and doesn't show and ginger dosage: what the trials used. Berberine's own research sits mostly at 900 mg to 1.5 g a day of berberine HCl, in adults with elevated blood sugar or cholesterol markers — a dose bracket covered in berberine dosage. Neither body of research says anything about what happens when the two are taken together.

Taking them together

We haven't found a documented interaction between berberine and ginger specifically. Each has its own separate cautions: ginger's most notable one is a bleeding-risk interaction with blood thinners, covered in ginger and medications: what to check; berberine's broader interaction profile — including blood sugar and blood pressure medication — is covered in berberine and medications: what to check. If you take any medication in either category, talk to a doctor before combining supplements.

Questions people ask

Can you take berberine and ginger together?

We haven't found a documented interaction between the two, but we also haven't found a trial that tested them together. If you want both, you'd need a separate ginger product alongside Electric Tiger Berberine, which is single-ingredient.

Does ginger make berberine work better?

That hasn't been studied, so there's nothing establishing that pairing them changes what berberine does one way or another. Treat the two as separate ingredients with separate research until a trial says otherwise.

How much ginger and how much berberine should I take?

There's no dose-finding trial for either ingredient establishing one "correct" amount, let alone a combined one. What each trial used, on its own, is covered in ginger dosage and berberine dosage — check both if you're taking both, rather than assuming one product's serving size applies to the other.
