Berberine oil, MCT oil and other pairings: what's tested and what isn't

Electric Tiger Berberine is a capsule, not an oil or cream. No trial has tested pairing berberine with MCT, fish, black seed or oregano oil.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

Berberine itself isn't sold as a topical oil or cream by Electric Tiger — our product is a two-capsule oral serving. "Berberine oil" searches usually mean one of two different things: a topical skincare product, or taking oral berberine alongside another oil (MCT, fish, black seed or oregano) for absorption or a combined effect. Neither has been tested in a human trial.

Is there a topical berberine oil or cream?

Some skincare formulations use berberine-containing plant extracts on the skin, a different product category and use case from an oral supplement — we don't sell or evaluate topical products here. What we sell is an oral capsule, and nothing in the berberine research we've reviewed covers applying it to skin.

Berberine with MCT oil, fish oil or black seed oil

Berberine is poorly absorbed on its own. A 2026 pharmacology review cites oral bioavailability of roughly 0.68% in animal studies, with only low plasma concentrations reaching the bloodstream after dosing. That low absorption is part of why some people pair berberine capsules with a source of dietary fat like MCT oil or fish oil, reasoning that a fat-soluble delivery route might help. We haven't found a human trial testing whether taking berberine with MCT oil, fish oil or black seed oil changes how much reaches the bloodstream, or changes any outcome. Taking berberine with a meal that contains fat is a reasonable, low-risk thing to try, but it's an untested idea, not an established absorption strategy.

Berberine and oregano oil

Berberine and oregano oil are both used informally in gut-health routines, sometimes together — people searching for this pairing are often asking about SIBO specifically. We haven't found a trial testing the combination in people. Each has its own separate research base, studied on its own, not together, and neither substitutes for a documented interaction study. Talk to a doctor before combining supplements if you have a diagnosed digestive condition.

Taking oils with berberine: safety

We haven't found a documented interaction between berberine and any of these oils. Berberine's own broader medication-interaction profile — including drugs affecting blood sugar, blood pressure and heart rhythm — is covered in berberine and medications: what to check. Dietary oils like MCT, fish and black seed oil aren't medications, but if you're taking a prescription alongside any of them, that's worth a pharmacist's or doctor's input too.

Questions people ask

Can you take berberine and black seed oil together?

We haven't found a documented interaction between the two, or a trial testing them combined. Black seed oil (Nigella sativa) has its own separate research, studied on its own, not paired with berberine.

Can you take berberine with fish oil?

We haven't found a documented interaction, but "no known interaction" isn't the same as "tested together." No trial has measured what the combination does.

Does berberine come in an oil form?

Not as a systemic oral supplement from us — our product is a capsule. Topical berberine products exist in skincare, a different category and use case entirely.
