When is the best time to take burdock root?
No trial has tested the best time to take burdock root. The tea trial used three cups a day half an hour after meals. Plain root tea has few calories, but whether it breaks a fast depends on your definition.
No study has tested when to take burdock root, so there is no research-backed best time. The tea trial had people drink it half an hour after meals, which was its design rather than a finding. Plain root tea is low in calories, but whether it breaks a fast depends on why you are fasting.
What the research says about timing
Nothing directly. In the trial of burdock root tea in 36 people with knee osteoarthritis, the intervention group drank three cups a day half an hour after meals; there was no comparison with other times. The 12-week trial of 460 mg a day of root powder in 60 women with polycystic ovary syndrome reports a daily dose with no timing comparison in its abstract. Take it when you'll be consistent; with a meal if it upsets your stomach, as with any supplement.
Will burdock root tea break a fast?
There is no research on it, so this is arithmetic. USDA FoodData Central lists raw burdock root at 72 kcal per 100 g, of which about 80% is water, which implies roughly 360 kcal per 100 g of dry matter. A 2 g tea portion, the amount per cup in the tea trial, therefore holds at most about 7 kcal, and only a fraction of that would reach the cup. Whether that "breaks" a fast depends on whether your fast is about calories, insulin response or something else, and no study has measured burdock tea against any of those. If your fast is strict, the safe answer is to drink it after the fast.
When to eat burdock root as a vegetable
Any meal. Gobo is eaten as a side dish in Japan and ueong in Korea, in braises, stir-fries and rolls, with no particular time of day.
When to plant and harvest burdock root
For gardeners: burdock is a biennial, forming its root in the first year and flowering in the second, according to a review of the species. Gardening guidance generally says to sow in spring and lift the roots in the first autumn, before the plant flowers and the root turns tough and woody. Burdock is also a vigorous self-seeder, so many gardeners remove the flower heads before they set burrs. Only harvest from plants you have grown yourself or can identify with certainty.
