Does fish oil have protein? Fish oil and protein shakes
Fish oil is entirely fat-based and contains no protein. It's commonly taken alongside a protein shake, but the two aren't interchangeable and there's no documented interaction between them.
No — fish oil contains no protein. It's a source of two omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, delivered in a fat-soluble softgel; a protein shake supplies amino acids in gram quantities from whey, casein or a plant blend. The two are commonly used together in the same daily routine, but they're not interchangeable, and there's no documented interaction between them.
Why they end up in the same routine
Fish oil and a protein shake often show up in the same daily stack simply because both are common, general-purpose supplements — one taken for its fat content, one taken to help meet a daily protein target. That's a routine choice, not a tested combination: no trial has measured fish oil and whey protein given together against either one alone.
Does fish oil have protein?
No. Fish oil concentrate is composed of fatty acids — mainly EPA and DHA — with no protein or amino acid content. Our panel lists fish oil concentrate, EPA, DHA and vitamin E. A protein shake is the opposite kind of nutrient entirely: a whey, casein or plant-based protein powder is measured in grams of protein per scoop, not fat content, and typical servings supply somewhere in the range of 20-30 g of protein.
Can you mix fish oil into a protein shake?
Not practically. Our fish oil comes as a softgel, meant to be swallowed whole, not opened or blended into a liquid — the oil inside is what causes the fishy aftertaste some people notice, and it isn't designed to mix into a shake. If you take both, the straightforward approach is swallowing the softgel with a meal and taking your protein shake separately.
What actually matters if you're taking both
- Different jobs. Fish oil supplies omega-3 fatty acids; protein supplies amino acids for muscle repair and daily protein intake. Taking one doesn't reduce your need for the other, and neither substitutes for the other.
- Timing. Fish oil is commonly taken with meals; protein shake timing (pre- or post-workout, or as a meal replacement) doesn't depend on fish oil, and the reverse is also true.
- Checking labels. Some protein blends add other ingredients (digestive enzymes, added vitamins). Check any blended product's own label rather than assuming it matches a plain protein powder or a plain fish oil softgel.
Questions people ask
Does fish oil have protein?
No. Fish oil concentrate is entirely fat-based (EPA and DHA); it has no protein content.
Can I take fish oil with a protein shake?
Yes, as two separate products taken around the same time — there's no documented interaction. The softgel isn't meant to be blended into the shake itself.
Does omega-3 help build muscle like protein does?
Protein is the established nutrient for muscle repair and growth, backed by a large research base. Fish oil's research base is in a different territory — see fish oil benefits: what's established and what isn't for what it does and doesn't cover.
