Hyaluronic acid and collagen: what the evidence does and doesn't show
No trial has tested combining hyaluronic acid and collagen for joint comfort. A 2025 industry-funded trial of a specific proprietary matrix ingredient containing both found skin improvements over 12 weeks, but it isn't a test of two separately dosed supplements taken together.
The evidence doesn't support that pairing hyaluronic acid with collagen produces a joint benefit — no trial has tested that combination for joint pain. One 2025 industry-funded trial found a specific hyaluronic-acid-and-collagen matrix ingredient improved skin measures over 12 weeks, but it tested a single proprietary blend, not two separately dosed supplements taken together.
What the evidence doesn't support
It doesn't support combining hyaluronic acid and collagen as a way to improve joint comfort — no trial has tested that specific pairing for joints, and the one small trial of hyaluronic acid alone for joint pain found no significant difference from placebo on its main outcome. It doesn't support the idea that any hyaluronic-acid-and-collagen combination product on the market has been tested; the one relevant trial used a single specific ingredient blend, not a generic stand-in for "HA plus collagen." And it doesn't establish that combining the two does more for skin than hyaluronic acid alone — no trial has run that direct head-to-head comparison.
What the trials found
A 2025 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial gave 60 women aged 35-65 with signs of skin aging either 60 mg/day of a specific hyaluronic acid matrix ingredient — which also contains sulfated glycosaminoglycans and collagen — or a placebo, for 12 weeks. Wrinkles and smoothness significantly improved by 6 weeks, roughness by 12 weeks, and hydration and brightness improved throughout, versus placebo. No serious adverse events were recorded. The trial was funded by the ingredient's manufacturer (PMID 40498387). This is the closest thing to a "hyaluronic acid and collagen" trial that exists, but it tested one specific, proprietary matrix ingredient at a set dose — not a generic combination of separately dosed hyaluronic acid and collagen supplements, which is how most people search for and buy the two.
Separately, hyaluronic acid alone has its own trial base for skin: a 2025 meta-analysis of 7 randomized trials found oral hyaluronic acid (without collagen) significantly improved skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkle depth versus placebo (PMID 40911749). And for joints specifically — the other common reason people pair the two — a small 2008 pilot trial of 80 mg/day of hyaluronic acid alone for 8 weeks found no significant difference from placebo on the main pain measure in people with knee pain (PMID 18208600). No trial has tested adding collagen to a joint-focused hyaluronic acid dose.
Questions people ask
Does a hyaluronic acid and collagen supplement work better than either alone?
No trial has directly compared the combination against hyaluronic acid alone or collagen alone for the same outcome. The one trial testing a combined ingredient found skin improvements versus placebo, but without a third arm testing hyaluronic acid by itself, there's no way to know from that trial whether the collagen added anything.
Should I take hyaluronic acid and collagen together for joints?
No trial has tested that specific combination for joint pain or comfort. The one relevant hyaluronic-acid-alone trial for joints found no significant difference from placebo on its main pain measure, so there's no trial evidence supporting either ingredient alone for this use, let alone the pairing.
What's in a hyaluronic acid and collagen supplement?
Products vary. Some pair separately dosed hyaluronic acid and collagen as two distinct ingredients on the label; others use a single proprietary "matrix" ingredient, like the one tested in the 2025 trial above, that already combines the two along with other compounds. When to talk to a doctor
Neither hyaluronic acid nor collagen, alone or combined, is a treatment for a diagnosed joint condition or a skin disease, and nothing here is a substitute for medical evaluation of persistent joint pain or a skin concern. If you're pregnant, nursing, or take a prescription medication, ask a doctor before adding either supplement.
