Is it safe to take alfalfa every day?

The one controlled alfalfa trial tested daily use for 12 weeks without serious effects for most participants. It's a different question for a few specific groups and beyond that time frame.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

Alfalfa is "generally recognized as safe" as a food, and the one controlled trial that exists tested a daily dose — 6 g/day of seed powder — for 12 weeks without serious effects for most participants. That covers routine daily use for most healthy adults over that time frame. It's a different, more specific question for a few groups, and for use longer than 12 weeks.

What "generally recognized as safe" actually means

NIH's LactMed monograph on alfalfa describes it as generally well tolerated and GRAS as a food under FDA's framework — a food-safety designation based on long history of use, not a clinical trial finding about a specific supplement dose. That designation is one reason alfalfa is legal and common in tablets, capsules and tea; it isn't the same as a trial proving daily supplement-level use is risk-free for everyone.

The one trial that tested sustained daily use

A 2024 randomized trial gave 60 men 6 g/day of alfalfa seed powder, alongside vitamin E, every day for 12 weeks. One participant withdrew for abdominal bloating and one for a respiratory allergic reaction; no other adverse effects were reported. That's the only controlled data on what happens with a defined daily amount over a defined period — and it stops at 12 weeks. See alfalfa dosage for how that amount compares to a typical tablet.

Who daily use is a different question for

If you have lupus or another autoimmune condition, case reports since the 1980s have linked alfalfa to flares, and the mechanism — a compound called L-canavanine — has real lab and animal support behind it; ask a doctor before making alfalfa a daily habit rather than assuming the case reports don't apply to you. If you take warfarin or another blood thinner, a National Institutes of Health reference monograph advises avoiding alfalfa outright because of its vitamin K content, and daily use is exactly the scenario that interaction is about. Who should not take alfalfa covers both in full, including pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Beyond a few months

No trial has followed daily alfalfa use longer than 12 weeks, so there's no controlled data on what a year or more of daily use looks like. The lupus case reports that exist mostly describe longer, less controlled use than any trial has tested — which is a gap in the evidence, not proof either way, and a reasonable thing to bring up if you're planning to take alfalfa daily for an extended period.

Is alfalfa safe long-term?

Not established by trial — the longest controlled daily use on record is 12 weeks. See who should not take alfalfa for who has a specific, documented reason to be more cautious.

Is it safe to take alfalfa with other supplements daily?

We haven't found alfalfa-specific research on combining it with other supplements beyond the vitamin K interaction with blood thinners — see alfalfa and medications: what to check.
