Is it safe to take cinnamon every day?

Daily cinnamon safety splits mainly on species. Cassia's coumarin content sets a practical daily ceiling; Ceylon's doesn't. Neither species has a human trial longer than about 12 weeks, so "daily, long-term" itself is outside what's been directly tested.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

It splits mostly on species. Ceylon cinnamon's coumarin content is low enough that it doesn't carry the practical daily ceiling cassia does. Cassia's daily safety depends on staying under Europe's coumarin tolerable intake, which some multi-gram bark doses can cross. Neither species has a long-term human trial, so "safe every day for months or years" isn't something research has directly tested for either.

The species decides most of the daily-safety question

A 2012 analysis of 60 retail cinnamon samples found cassia cinnamon averaging 2,650 to 7,017 mg of coumarin per kilogram of bark; a Ceylon sample tested in the same study had none detected. Coumarin, not cinnamaldehyde, is the compound behind the safety limit — see Ceylon vs. cassia cinnamon for the full spec comparison.

For cassia — daily use means watching the coumarin math

Europe's tolerable daily intake for coumarin is 0.1 mg per kilogram of body weight, about 7 mg a day for a 70 kg adult. Based on the coumarin levels measured above, that works out to roughly 1 to 2.6 grams of cassia bark a day before crossing it, depending on the specific product — cinnamon dosage has the full table. Most labels don't print a coumarin number, so there's no way to do this math from the bottle alone; how to choose a good cinnamon covers asking a brand for that result directly.

For Ceylon — the coumarin ceiling mostly doesn't apply

At ordinary supplement doses, Ceylon's low coumarin content means the specific math above doesn't produce a practical daily limit. That's a real advantage on one measured risk, not proof that Ceylon has been extensively studied for daily safety generally — most of the human research on cinnamon used cassia, so Ceylon carries less dedicated safety data of any kind, not more.

What "daily" actually covers in the research

The longest cinnamon trial we found in the record ran 12 weeks: a placebo-controlled trial of 250 mg of an aqueous extract twice a day in 22 overweight or obese adults with impaired fasting glucose. The larger blood-sugar meta-analyses pool many shorter trials without reporting one consistent duration for the whole dataset. Nothing in the record follows daily cinnamon supplement users for months or years, in either species — an honest gap, not a reason to assume either danger or safety beyond what's been measured.

Who should check with a doctor before daily use

Cassia's coumarin has been linked to liver injury at high, sustained intake, including in at least one case report involving a statin medication (see cinnamon side effects). Anyone with a liver condition, or on a medication their doctor has flagged as hard on the liver, should ask before daily use — especially of a cassia product. The same goes for anyone on a medication that lowers blood sugar, since some cinnamon research has found an additive effect there; see who should not take cinnamon for the full list.

Questions people ask

Is ceylon cinnamon supplement safe?

For the coumarin-specific concern, yes — Ceylon's low coumarin content means the practical daily ceiling that applies to cassia doesn't apply the same way. That said, no cinnamon trial we found ran longer than about 12 weeks, so "safe long-term" hasn't been directly tested for Ceylon any more than for cassia.

Is cinnamon supplement safe to take every day?

It depends on the species and dose. For cassia, staying under the coumarin math above is the practical safety question. For Ceylon, that specific concern is much smaller. Neither has long-duration human trial data behind daily use.

How much cinnamon supplement should I take daily?

There's no single established daily dose — it depends on whether the product is bark powder or a concentrated extract. Cinnamon dosage covers the trial ranges for both.
