L-carnitine and taurine: taking them together

L-carnitine and taurine are both common energy-drink ingredients, but we haven't found a trial testing the pair on its own. A sports-nutrition position stand on energy drinks attributes most of the measured performance benefit to caffeine content, not to carnitine or taurine specifically.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

L-carnitine and taurine are both common energy-drink ingredients, usually alongside caffeine, but we haven't found a trial that tested L-carnitine and taurine as their own combination, separate from a full energy-drink formula. A 2023 sports-nutrition position stand on energy drinks credits caffeine, not carnitine or taurine, for most of the measured performance effect.

What each one actually is

L-carnitine's established job is transporting long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria for energy; see what is L-carnitine?. Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid the body produces and also gets from meat and fish, manufactured separately for use in energy drinks and sports supplements — it has its own line of research that this article doesn't cover.

What the energy-drink research actually says about the pairing

A 2023 International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand reviewed the evidence on energy drinks and energy shots, which commonly list caffeine, taurine, carnitine, B vitamins and several other ingredients on the label. Its conclusion: the ergogenic value of caffeine is well established, but "the potential additive benefits of other nutrients contained in ED and ES remains to be determined." The same review states plainly that many energy-drink ingredients — taurine and carnitine included — haven't been evaluated alone or in combination with the other nutrients in the product. In other words, the position stand that actually reviewed products containing both ingredients found no basis to credit either one specifically for what an energy drink does; that's attributed to caffeine content.

Is there a documented interaction?

We haven't found one between L-carnitine and taurine specifically. If you're getting both from an energy drink rather than as standalone supplements, the caffeine and sugar content of that drink matters more for safety than the carnitine-taurine combination itself — see the position stand's own cautions about total daily caffeine intake.

Questions people ask

What is L-carnitine and taurine, and why are they in energy drinks together?

They're two separately sourced ingredients commonly added to energy drinks alongside caffeine. A sports-nutrition review of that category found caffeine drives most of the measured effect, and that the added value of ingredients like taurine and carnitine — alone or combined — hasn't been established.

Is it safe to take L-carnitine and taurine together?

We haven't found a documented interaction between the two. Neither is included in this article's citation base beyond the energy-drink review above, so this isn't a full safety review of the combination.

Does L-carnitine and taurine work better together than caffeine alone?

The position stand cited above found the opposite pattern: caffeine content, not taurine or carnitine, is what the evidence credits for an energy drink's measured performance effect.
