Research review

Does milk thistle help with OCD, autism or ADHD? What the research does and doesn't show

Searching the published research for milk thistle, silymarin or silibinin and OCD, autism or ADHD turned up no study at all — human, animal or mechanism-level. This page says so plainly rather than reaching for research on a different topic.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

Searching the published research for milk thistle, silymarin or silibinin alongside OCD, autism or ADHD turned up no study on the topic at all — not a human trial, not an animal study, not even lab-dish research. That's a real gap in the literature, not a quiet "it doesn't work" — it simply hasn't been tested.

What the evidence doesn't support

It doesn't support milk thistle, silymarin or silibinin for OCD, autism or ADHD, in any form, at any dose. There is no trial to point to, positive or negative, so nothing here is a claim about what milk thistle does or doesn't do for any of these three conditions — the honest answer is that this specific question hasn't been researched. Nothing here describes a specific product's dose, and nothing here is a claim about any product.

What the trials found

Nothing specific to report. A search of the published literature for silymarin or silibinin combined with obsessive-compulsive disorder, autism or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder returned no matching study. That's a different situation from milk thistle's liver, kidney and metabolic research, where a real (if mixed and often preclinical) body of work exists — see milk thistle benefits: what the research does and doesn't show. For OCD, autism and ADHD specifically, there is currently nothing published to summarize.

What general human safety data does exist for milk thistle isn't specific to any of these three conditions. A 2019 safety review covering trials at doses up to 2,100 mg/day for 24 weeks found milk thistle generally well tolerated in adults, with gastrointestinal upset, headache and skin reactions as the main reported effects — but those trials weren't run in people with OCD, autism or ADHD, and none measured symptoms related to any of them.

Questions people ask

Is milk thistle good for OCD?

No study of any kind — human or animal — was found testing this. There's nothing in the published research to answer the question either way.

Does milk thistle help with autism?

Same answer: no study testing milk thistle, silymarin or silibinin for autism turned up in the research reviewed here.

Is milk thistle good for ADHD?

No trial exists for this either. If you're researching supplements for a diagnosed condition like ADHD, that gap is worth knowing before assuming a supplement marketed broadly for "brain health" has been tested for it specifically.

When to talk to a doctor

OCD, autism and ADHD are diagnosed conditions best managed with a qualified clinician; milk thistle is not a treatment for any of them, and no research reviewed here suggests otherwise. If a child or adult is taking prescription medication for any of these conditions, ask a doctor before adding any supplement, milk thistle included — see milk thistle and medications: what to check. Dosing guidance for children is outside what this page, or the research it cites, addresses.
