Milk thistle and cinnamon: what to know about taking them together

No trial has tested milk thistle and cinnamon taken together, alone or as part of the multi-ingredient blends that combine them with berberine, turmeric or black pepper. Each ingredient has its own separate research, and there's no documented safety problem with combining them, though that's an absence of data rather than a tested combination.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

No trial has tested milk thistle and cinnamon taken together, either as a standalone pair or as part of the multi-ingredient blends that combine them with berberine, turmeric, or black pepper. Each ingredient has its own separate research, and a blend selling several of them in one capsule isn't the same as a trial testing that specific combination.

Blends aren't the same as tested combinations

Search results for milk thistle and cinnamon often turn up multi-ingredient products — commonly a mix of berberine, Ceylon cinnamon, turmeric, milk thistle, and sometimes black pepper or artichoke — marketed together for general metabolic and liver support. Each of those ingredients has its own, separately run research: milk thistle's trials are concentrated on people already diagnosed with liver disease, cinnamon has its own separate evidence base with its own limits, and berberine and turmeric each have theirs. No trial we found has tested the specific combination of milk thistle and cinnamon, two-ingredient or as part of a larger blend, so a product combining several ingredients isn't backed by a trial of that exact formula — each ingredient's evidence stands on its own.

What's actually known about combining them

A 2017 pooled analysis of 6 trials in people with diagnosed liver disease found silymarin (milk thistle's active complex) produced a small, statistically significant but clinically negligible improvement in two liver enzymes. That trial didn't include cinnamon and says nothing about combining the two. Nothing in milk thistle's documented interaction research — a small set of studies on liver-enzyme metabolism and one blood-pressure drug — involves cinnamon, and there's no documented safety problem with combining the two supplements, though that's an absence of data rather than a tested green light.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to take milk thistle and cinnamon together?

Nothing in either ingredient's documented safety research points to a specific problem with combining them, but no trial has tested the pair directly.

Do milk thistle and cinnamon blends work?

No trial has tested that specific multi-ingredient combination. Each ingredient in a blend has its own separate research; the blend itself typically hasn't been studied as a formula.
