Probiotic gummies: what to know before you buy

What a gummy probiotic is, what one study of gummies found, and what to check on the label. We sell a capsule, not a gummy.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

A probiotic gummy is a chewable delivery form, not a different kind of probiotic: what matters is the same as for a capsule, which strain, how many live cells and when they were counted. Gummies add two more checks, the serving size and the sugar. We sell a capsule, not a gummy.

What one study of gummies found

The one gummy study we found, funded by a confectionery company, used a spore-forming organism (Heyndrickxia coagulans SNZ1969). The gummies held their viable count over a 24-month shelf life, meeting a label claim of at least 1 billion CFU per serving, and a serving was 24 g. In 24 healthy adults who ate one serving a day for two weeks, the spores germinated in all volunteers and the strain was still detected in stool for two weeks afterwards. It had no placebo group, and it measured presence, not a benefit. Spore-formers are built to survive; that result does not tell you that the lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in most supplements keep their counts in a gummy.

Probiotics gummies: what to check on the label

  • Strain codes. A review of 249 trials found effects are strain-specific and purpose-specific, and an expert panel's definition of a probiotic requires an identified strain. See how to choose a good probiotic.
  • Count and its date. At manufacture is not at expiry. A lab survey of probiotics sold in one market found almost none met their label claim and 11% had no viable cells.
  • Serving size. A gummy serving can be several pieces. Price per gummy is not price per serving.
  • Sugar and other ingredients. Gummies are held together by sugars or sweeteners, gelling agents and flavours. Read the Other ingredients line, and note that a gelatin-based gummy is not vegan.
  • Storage. Follow the pack; we found no study comparing gummies with capsules to cite.

Gummies for women, or for particular groups

Audience labelling does not change the checklist. The research reviews we cite did not report results by product audience. Pet products are not covered here.

How the capsule we sell compares

Electric Tiger Probiotic 20 Billion CFU is a vegetable-capsule product: 20 billion CFU at the time of manufacture per capsule, from 13 listed organisms (species only, one 317 mg row), as low as $14.39 a bottle on subscription. It prints no strain codes and no count per organism, and none of the listed organisms is the spore-former studied in the gummy trial. We do not say a capsule is better than a gummy; there is no head-to-head study to cite. For the other forms, see probiotics powder and liquid.
