Research review

Do probiotics help with candida, thrush or parasites? What the research does and doesn't show

For oral thrush, reviews of small trials found lower yeast counts with probiotics, with caution about quality; for parasites we found no verified human trial.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

The evidence does not support probiotics as a treatment for candida overgrowth, thrush or intestinal parasites. For oral candidiasis, reviews of small trials found fewer yeast counts above a threshold but flagged high risk of bias. For parasites, the human evidence we verified is a narrative review that calls for more research. This is research, not treatment advice.

What the evidence doesn't support

  • No parasite treatment was shown: a 2021 review of probiotics in Giardia infection described mostly mechanistic and preclinical findings and said suitable probiotics still need to be found. We found no verified trial of probiotics alone for parasites.
  • No gut candida result: the trials below counted yeast in the mouth or tested vaginal infection. We found no verified trial of a supplement for "candida overgrowth" in the gut.
  • No cure for vaginal yeast infection: six trials found no difference from placebo in positive cultures.

What the trials found

Oral candidiasis (thrush)

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 13 randomized trials found the odds of oral candidiasis, defined by yeast counts above a CFU/mL threshold, were lower with probiotics (OR 0.38, 95% CI 0.22 to 0.68; heterogeneity 60%). In people diagnosed with oral candidiasis or related disease the odds ratio was 0.40. The authors said small samples and high-risk studies require caution. A 2019 review of 12 studies (eight randomized trials, four before-and-after studies) found the pooled odds ratio was not significant (0.71, 95% credible interval 0.37 to 1.32) but was in randomized trials alone (0.53, 0.27 to 0.93), with a larger effect in denture wearers and medium-to-high risk of bias. Strains and doses varied.

Vaginal yeast infection

In the systematic review of six randomized trials in women with vulvovaginal candidiasis, probiotics did not differ from placebo on positive culture (OR 1.12, 95% CI 0.39 to 3.26) but recurrence was lower (OR 0.14, 95% CI 0.03 to 0.70). See probiotics and infection.

Parasites

A 2021 narrative review of Giardia duodenalis reported that Lactobacillus and Saccharomyces strains are described as shortening symptoms and repairing damage in preclinical and clinical studies, and that further research is required to find suitable probiotics. Giardia is a diagnosed infection treated by a doctor. We found no verified human trial that supports a probiotic as a stand-alone approach.

Questions people ask

Are probiotics good for candida overgrowth or thrush?

For oral thrush, reviews of small trials found lower yeast counts with probiotics, with caution about quality. "Candida overgrowth" as a self-diagnosed gut condition is not something we found a verified trial for.

Do probiotics help with parasites?

Not on verified human evidence. If you suspect a parasite, from travel, diarrhea that will not clear or weight loss, a doctor can test for it.

When to talk to a doctor

A probiotic is not a treatment for a fungal infection or a parasite. White patches in the mouth, persistent diarrhea, blood in stool, fever, weight loss or recurring genital symptoms need a medical assessment. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking a probiotic if you have a weakened immune system, wear dentures or take prescription medicine.
