Guide
How much sea moss should you take a day?
No trial has set a dose for sea moss; the label amount, the doses used in other seaweed and burdock studies, and the iodine ceiling.
Our label directs two capsules once a day: 500 mg Irish moss, 500 mg bladderwrack, 400 mg burdock root and 5 mg black pepper extract. No trial has set a dose for sea moss, so no amount is proven. The practical ceiling is iodine, not milligrams of seaweed, and our panel states no iodine amount.
How much sea moss per day: what our label says
Electric Tiger Sea Moss with Bladderwrack + Burdock is dosed by the serving: two capsules, once a day, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal or as directed by your healthcare professional. Each serving holds 500 mg organic Irish moss (Chondrus crispus), 500 mg organic bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus), 400 mg organic burdock root and 5 mg black pepper extract, as whole dried plant material rather than extracts. A bottle holds 30 servings, as low as $14.39 on subscription (product page). The label says not to exceed the recommended dose, and we are not suggesting more.
What doses the research used
For whole Irish moss, there are no human trial doses to report: we found no trial at any dose. For the other ingredients, the doses in published human studies were:
- Dried whole bladderwrack: 700 mg to 1.4 g a day in a three-woman case series (PMID 15294021) and 5 g a day in a 36-person pilot (PMID 38931192).
- Bladderwrack extracts, which are a different form: 2,000 mg a day (PMID 34015499) and 500 mg a day of a two-species extract (PMID 35323474).
- Burdock root powder: 460 mg a day for 12 weeks in 60 women with a diagnosed condition (PMID 41757842).
Those are doses people were given in studies, not recommendations, and the populations, forms and goals differ from a healthy adult taking a capsule. What the studies found is in sea moss benefits: what the research does and doesn't show. Our 500 mg of bladderwrack sits below the lowest of the whole-plant doses above, so those studies are not a guide to our serving.
How much sea moss gel per day
No trial or health authority we found sets a daily amount of gel. Gel is seaweed blended with water, and recipes vary, so a tablespoon of one gel is not a tablespoon of another in seaweed or iodine. The iodine in a single portion of whole-food seaweed products ranged from 128 to 62,400 mcg in one survey of 96 products (PMID 33889064). A species-specific number is lacking, so we cannot give you a gel amount that is safe or effective.
Sea moss overdose: the iodine ceiling
Seaweed supplements are limited by iodine. The US recommended dietary allowance for adults is 150 mcg a day and the tolerable upper intake level is 1,100 mcg a day; the American Thyroid Association advises against iodine and kelp supplements delivering more than 500 mcg a day (ATA statement on excess iodine). Irish moss alone is low: 30 dried samples averaged 3.86 mcg per gram, so reaching 1,100 mcg would take 286 g a day (PMID 32803579). Bladderwrack is the variable one. Across 14 seaweed supplements, iodine per daily dose ranged from 5 to 5,600 mcg, and labels for species and iodine were often inadequate or inaccurate (PMID 33889064).
Our panel does not state an iodine amount, and it varies by batch, so we will not guess at one. What you can control is the total: iodine from every seaweed product, kelp tablet, multivitamin and iodised salt adds up. A case report describes a 70-year-old woman with no thyroid history who developed a fast heart rate, insomnia, anxiety and weight loss about three months after starting kelp tablets, which resolved after she stopped them (PMID 31517826). Kelp is far richer in iodine than the seaweeds in our capsules, so this does not show our product would do it. It shows why more is not better.
Questions people ask
How much sea moss should I take a day?
Follow the label: two capsules once a day. No trial establishes a dose for sea moss, so more is not shown to do more, and the iodine total is the limit that matters.
How much sea moss per day is safe?
There is no sea-moss-specific safe amount. For iodine, adults have a 1,100 mcg daily upper level, and the American Thyroid Association advises against seaweed or iodine supplements above 500 mcg a day. Ask your doctor if you have thyroid disease.
How much sea moss gel per day?
We found no established amount. Gel varies in water and seaweed content, so spoonfuls cannot be compared between products.
Can you take too much sea moss?
Yes, mainly through iodine, which varies widely between seaweed products and batches. If you take capsules plus gel plus a multivitamin, the total is unknown unless each states iodine. See sea moss side effects and who should not take sea moss.
Does it matter when I take it?
Our directions are before a meal. See when to take sea moss.
