Guide
How much vitamin D should you take a day?
The adult RDA is 15 to 20 mcg (600 to 800 IU), the upper limit 100 mcg (4,000 IU) from all sources. The numbers, the trial evidence at higher doses and what our label provides.
There is no single right amount. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (NIH ODS) sets the adult RDA at 15 mcg (600 IU) a day to age 70 and 20 mcg (800 IU) over 70, with an upper limit of 100 mcg (4,000 IU) from all sources. Beyond the RDA, ask a clinician.
The numbers: RDA, Daily Value and upper limit
Three different numbers get mixed up on vitamin D labels and in searches:
| What it is | mcg a day | IU a day | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| RDA, adults 19 to 70 | 15 mcg | 600 IU | Intake that meets the needs of nearly all healthy people (food and supplements; sun exposure varies and is not counted) |
| RDA, adults over 70 | 20 mcg | 800 IU | As above, higher for older adults |
| Daily Value (the % on labels) | 20 mcg | 800 IU | A labeling reference, not a recommendation and not a limit |
| Tolerable upper intake level (UL) | 100 mcg | 4,000 IU | The most that is unlikely to cause harm in nearly all adults, from food and supplements combined |
The RDA is the same for adult men and women. Conversion: 1 mcg = 40 IU. A label showing "250% DV" for 50 mcg is arithmetic against the 20 mcg Daily Value; it does not mean 250% of your needs, and it is not a measure of how much is better.
How much vitamin D3 per day should an adult take?
For most adults, supplement or no supplement, the answer starts with the RDA and with what you already get from food, sun and any other supplements. The trials are not a dosing guide: they asked whether a given dose changed outcomes, and the largest at 2,000 IU a day (VITAL) found no effect on cancer, cardiovascular events, fractures or depression in generally healthy adults over 50. Those results, with who was studied, are in vitamin D benefits: what the research does and doesn't show.
That leaves a simple rule: take the amount your label directs, count every other vitamin D you take, stay under 100 mcg (4,000 IU) from all sources, and let a blood test and a clinician, not a search result, set anything beyond that.
How many IU is 25 mcg, 50 mcg, and what about mg?
- 25 mcg = 1,000 IU. 50 mcg = 2,000 IU. 100 mcg = 4,000 IU (the upper limit).
- 125 mcg = 5,000 IU. 250 mcg = 10,000 IU. 1,250 mcg = 50,000 IU.
- Searches for "vitamin D3 1000 mg" or "50 mg" are unit mix-ups. 1 mg is 1,000 mcg, which is 40,000 IU. A bottle labelled in mg of vitamin D would be a very different product from one labelled in mcg.
What is a high dose, and can you overdose?
Anything above the 100 mcg (4,000 IU) upper limit is above what NIH ODS considers unlikely to cause harm, so 5,000 IU (125 mcg), 10,000 IU and 50,000 IU products are all above it. Taking them is a decision for you and a clinician, not a label default, and a clinician will usually want a blood test first.
Vitamin D toxicity is rare, but it is real: a 2018 clinical review describes it as usually caused by inadvertent or improper intake of extremely high doses, with high blood calcium (hypercalcemia) producing confusion, apathy, repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, frequent urination, thirst and dehydration. The risk is not zero close to the upper limit either. A 2023 meta-analysis of 22 randomised trials (12,952 adults, all vitamin D3, 3,200 to 4,000 IU a day for six months or more) found hypercalcemia was more common on vitamin D than on control (relative risk 2.21, about 4 extra cases per 1,000 people), along with more falls and hospitalisations, while kidney stones and deaths did not differ. And in a three-year trial, 4,000 and 10,000 IU a day produced lower radial bone density than 400 IU. Side effects are covered in vitamin D side effects.
What our label provides
Electric Tiger Vitamin D3 provides 50 mcg (2,000 IU) of vitamin D3 as cholecalciferol per softgel, 250% of the Daily Value and half of the 100 mcg adult upper limit. Directions: adults take one softgel daily, or as directed by a health care professional. One softgel a day is the whole serving; do not add a second. There are 100 softgels in a bottle, as low as $15.35 a bottle on subscription.
Do not stack it with other vitamin D. The upper limit counts everything. Our Personal Routines "D Complex" pill carries 125 mcg (5,000 IU) of D3 on its own, which is over the limit before anything else is added, and with one softgel it comes to 175 mcg, 1.75 times the limit. Multivitamins add more. Add up every source before you take it.
Questions people ask
How much vitamin D3 should I take daily, and how many IU per day?
The RDA is 600 IU (15 mcg) for adults to age 70 and 800 IU (20 mcg) over 70, and the upper limit is 4,000 IU (100 mcg) from all sources. Our label directs one softgel of 2,000 IU. What is right for you depends on your diet, sun, other supplements and, if tested, your blood level.
How much vitamin D3 per day for a woman, or for men?
The RDA and upper limit are the same for adult women and men. We give no separate sex-specific amount.
How much vitamin D3 is too much, or safe to take daily?
Above 100 mcg (4,000 IU) a day from all sources is above the upper limit. Below it, 3,200 to 4,000 IU a day was linked to a small excess of hypercalcemia in a pooled analysis of trials, so "under the limit" is not the same as "no risk". At 2,000 IU the VITAL trial identified no excess hypercalcemia over about five years.
Can you overdose on vitamin D3?
Yes. It is rare, and the 2018 review describes it as usually coming from inadvertent or improper intake of extremely high doses of concentrated preparations; it shows up as high blood calcium. Count all sources and keep to the label.
Is 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 too much? Can I take it every day?
2,000 IU (50 mcg) is half the adult upper limit and is the dose the VITAL trial gave daily for a median 5.3 years, with no excess of adverse events identified. Taking it daily is how our label directs it, provided no other vitamin D source pushes your total over 100 mcg.
How often should I take vitamin D3: daily, weekly, 5,000 IU or 10,000 IU?
Our label directs once daily. Weekly and higher-dose regimens (5,000, 10,000 IU and above, in practice often 50,000 IU) exceed the daily upper limit when added up, and are for a clinician to direct. We give no schedule for them.
How much vitamin D3 in an egg, or from food?
Food provides vitamin D in modest amounts (egg yolk, fatty fish, fortified foods), and it counts toward the same 100 mcg limit. We have not quoted food values here.
Where do I take it, and what about timing?
A meal that contains fat is the one timing point with trial support: see when is the best time to take vitamin D.
