How long does it take probiotics to work?

No single timeline exists: effects depend on the strain and the purpose. What studies measured, how long organisms stay detectable, and what our label says.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

No trial we cite sets a timeline for a probiotic working: it depends on the strain and the purpose. What studies measured is presence. In one trial, 10 billion CFU a day of a single named strain raised that strain's group in stool after 4 weeks, and it was still raised two weeks after stopping.

What the studies measured, and when

A trial in 64 healthy young adults gave one named strain (Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei L. casei W8) at 10 billion CFU a day for 4 weeks. The strain's group rose from a trace of the stool bacteria to a larger trace, and was still 14 times higher two weeks after supplements stopped. The overall make-up of the gut bacteria did not change. That is a measure of presence, not of a benefit, and it covers one strain at one dose.

A second study sampled the gut lining of healthy volunteers given an 11-strain probiotic. The organisms stayed viable through gut passage, but whether they settled in the lining differed by person, gut region and strain, stool could not tell who had colonised, and the effect on the gut community was transient. A review of 7 placebo-controlled trials in healthy adults found no change in the diversity of stool bacteria in any of them.

Why there is no single answer

A review of 249 trials found that efficacy was strain-specific and purpose-specific, and that many products lack confirmatory trials. A separate review of dose-response studies found that whether a higher dose does more depends on the outcome, and for most outcomes there was no clear relationship. So "how long" has to be asked of a named strain, at a stated dose, for a stated purpose. Our capsule prints no strain codes, so there is no trial timeline we can attach to it.

What our label says

Electric Tiger Probiotic 20 Billion CFU directs one capsule daily with 6–8 oz of water, or as directed by a healthcare professional. One capsule is 20 billion CFU at the time of manufacture, from 13 listed organisms (species only), as low as $14.39 a bottle on subscription. We make no claim about when you will notice anything. For timing around the day, see the best time to take probiotics.

Questions people ask

How long does it take for probiotics to work, and how long before they start?

No timeline in the research we cite applies to a species-only product. The one trial above measured stool at 4 weeks. Do not read that as a promise of anything at 4 weeks.

How long should you take probiotics, and how long should you take a probiotic?

No duration is established for probiotics in general. Follow the label of the product you buy, and ask a doctor or pharmacist if you want a course for a specific purpose.

How long do probiotics stay in your system?

In the 64-adult trial, the strain's group was still raised two weeks after stopping, for that strain. In the gut-lining study, effects on the gut community were transient. Neither tested our capsule.

How long should I take probiotics after antibiotics, or how long after antibiotics should I start?

Timing around medicines is a question for your pharmacist. What we found is in probiotics and medications.

Do probiotics work, do they really work, and which probiotics actually work?

The accepted definition of a probiotic requires an identified strain, a known adequate amount and a demonstrated health benefit in the host. By that standard a probiotic is judged strain by strain and purpose by purpose. The review of 249 trials found many products lack a trial of their own. Why products may not work is partly viability: a laboratory survey of probiotics sold in one market found almost none met their label claim, and 11% had no viable cells. What research found on specific purposes is in probiotics benefits: what the research does and doesn't show.

How do probiotics work in the gut or in the body?

They are live organisms taken in an amount meant to be adequate. Whether they settle in the gut lining varied by person and strain in the gut-lining study, and their effect on the gut community was temporary. We cannot say more about a mechanism without a named strain.

How often should you take them, and do vaginal, oral or urinary-tract probiotics work?

Ours is one capsule daily per the label. Products made for other body sites are separate products with separate research, and are not covered here.

How long do probiotics last after the expiration date?

We have no study to cite. Our label gives the count at the time of manufacture, not at expiry, which is why the date matters: live counts can fall in storage. See how to choose a good probiotic.
