Is it safe to take hyssop every day?
The only daily-use evidence for hyssop is 4 weeks of a 12 g/day extract syrup in adults with asthma — the outer edge of what's been tested, not a general daily-use finding. FDA's food-use listing covers ordinary tea amounts, but that's a food classification, not a safety trial. Hyssop essential oil is a separate product this page doesn't give internal-use guidance for.
The only daily-use evidence for hyssop is 4 weeks of a 12 g/day extract syrup in adults with asthma — that's the outer edge of what's actually been tested, not a general green light for daily use at any dose, form or length of time. Hyssop essential oil is a separate product this daily-use answer doesn't cover, because it isn't taken internally.
What "daily" has actually been tested
A 2024 randomized trial gave 60 adults with asthma a hyssop syrup (6 g of extract per dose, twice daily — 12 g/day) or a placebo, every day for 4 weeks, added to their usual asthma treatment. Reported side effects were mild — thirst, dry mouth and throat irritation — though 5 participants with a dry cough stopped early because their symptoms worsened. That's the only continuous daily-dosing data point that exists; nothing establishes the safety of daily use beyond 4 weeks, or at other doses and forms like tea or a standard capsule. See hyssop side effects for the full picture.
Tea and food-use amounts are a separate category, not a tested "daily safe" finding
FDA lists hyssop among spices and natural seasonings generally recognized as safe for food use (21 CFR 182.10), which covers ordinary culinary amounts of the dried herb used daily, the way any herb or spice is. That's a food-use classification, not a clinical daily-safety trial at a specific supplement dose — it means hyssop tea is treated like other culinary herb teas, not that it's been separately studied for daily use. See hyssop tea for more.
Who has a specific reason for caution with daily use
Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with a history of seizures, and anyone with an allergy to other mint-family herbs has a specific reason to talk to a doctor before making hyssop a daily habit — see who should not take hyssop for the details on each.
The essential oil isn't part of this "daily" answer
Hyssop essential oil — used diffused or diluted on skin — is a different, far more concentrated product from the dried herb or extract this page covers, with its own separate safety picture. This site doesn't give guidance for taking the oil internally, daily or otherwise, because a 2019 systematic review of essential oils and seizure risk named hyssop among the oils that can trigger seizures when taken by mouth, due to its pinocamphone content. For diffusing or diluted topical use, see hyssop essential oil on skin, which covers what has and hasn't been tested for the oil.
Questions people ask
Is it safe to take hyssop every day?
Within the one tested window — 4 weeks, at 12 g/day of extract syrup, in adults with asthma — daily use didn't produce serious reported harm on average, though it worsened symptoms for part of that group. Daily use beyond 4 weeks, or at other doses and forms, hasn't been studied.
Is hyssop tea safe to drink every day?
FDA's food-use listing covers ordinary culinary amounts of the dried herb, which is the basis for treating a cup or two of tea a day the way any herbal infusion is used. No clinical trial has separately tested daily tea drinking.
Can you diffuse hyssop essential oil safely every day?
This page doesn't cover essential-oil usage guidance. See hyssop essential oil on skin for what's known about the oil and how it differs from the dried herb.
