Whey protein and cinnamon: making a cinnamon roll flavor at home

"Cinnamon roll" whey protein flavoring is a taste profile, not a measured cinnamon dose, and no trial has tested cinnamon and whey protein combined. A flavoring-level pinch of cinnamon is far below any studied supplement dose.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

"Cinnamon roll" as a whey protein flavor usually means a spice-and-vanilla flavor profile, not a specific dose of cinnamon added to the formula — and no trial has tested cinnamon and whey protein taken together. Our chocolate tub isn't cinnamon-roll flavored, but stirring in ground cinnamon is a simple way to build that flavor yourself.

What "cinnamon roll" flavoring usually means

Flavored protein powders marketed as "cinnamon roll" are built to taste like the pastry — cinnamon and vanilla notes, sometimes a hint of brown sugar or icing flavor — through natural or artificial flavoring compounds, not through a measured cinnamon supplement dose. The cinnamon contribution in a flavor blend like that is a taste ingredient, not something formulated to match a research dose.

Making one at home: how much cinnamon is a flavoring amount

A typical shake of ground cinnamon stirred into a drink — around a quarter to half a teaspoon — is roughly 0.5-1 g, well below the 1-6 g of bark powder or 500 mg of concentrated extract used in cinnamon supplement trials (see cinnamon dosage for those figures in full). A pinch for flavor and a supplement-level dose are two different amounts, even if the ingredient is the same.

No combined research exists

We didn't find a trial testing whey protein and cinnamon taken together, for any outcome. What follows from that is what follows for any untested combination: neither ingredient's separately-studied effects can be assumed to add up, cancel out, or change when they're mixed in one shake. If you're adding cinnamon hoping for a specific health effect rather than flavor, cinnamon and blood sugar: what the research shows covers what that separate literature actually finds — this page isn't the place to repeat it.

Our chocolate tub and cinnamon

Our label's ingredients are Whey Protein Blend (Whey Protein Isolate and Whey Protein Concentrate), Solnul® (Resistant Potato Starch), Natural Flavors, Pink Himalayan Crystal Salt, Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum, and Stevia Leaf Extract — no cinnamon. Adding cinnamon to a shake made from our tub is something you do yourself with a spice you already have, not a change to the product.

Questions people ask

Does whey protein taste good with cinnamon?

That's a matter of personal taste rather than research. Cinnamon pairs naturally with chocolate and vanilla flavors in baking and drinks generally, which is part of why "cinnamon roll" combinations are common in flavored protein powders.

Is cinnamon whey protein good for blood sugar?

That's really two separate questions — what cinnamon does, and what whey protein does — and neither has been tested as a combination. See cinnamon and blood sugar: what the research shows for what the cinnamon research specifically shows and doesn't show.

Can I add cinnamon to any whey protein?

Generally yes, as a culinary addition — a flavoring-level amount of cinnamon stirred into a shake is far below any studied supplement dose and isn't a known interaction with whey protein.
