Whey protein vs casein: what's actually different
Whey and casein are both dairy proteins split apart during cheesemaking, but they digest at very different speeds. A trial found whey raised blood amino acids faster than casein right after a meal, while a sports-nutrition position stand describes casein's studied use case as a pre-sleep dose for overnight muscle protein synthesis. We sell whey, not casein.
Whey and casein both come from milk, split apart during cheesemaking, but they digest at very different speeds. A trial matching all three major protein types to the same amino-acid dose found whey raised blood amino acids faster than casein right after a meal, while a sports-nutrition position stand describes casein's studied use case as a slow-release, pre-sleep dose. We sell whey, not casein.
| Whey protein | Casein | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | The liquid fraction of milk, separated during cheesemaking | The curd (solid) fraction of milk, separated during the same process |
| Digestion speed | Fast — raises blood amino acids within roughly an hour or two | Slow — forms a gel in the stomach, releasing amino acids gradually over hours |
| Most-studied timing | Around exercise, in the acute dose-response trials | Before sleep, for overnight amino acid availability |
| Do we sell it | Yes — 22 g per serving, isolate/concentrate blend | No |
Whey: best for, what the evidence shows, watch out for
Best for: a fast-digesting protein around a workout, or any time you want blood amino acids to rise quickly. What the evidence shows: a trial comparing whey hydrolysate, casein and soy protein isolate, all matched to 10 g of essential amino acids, found whey raised blood essential amino acid, BCAA and leucine concentrations faster than casein or soy right after a meal, and produced higher mixed muscle protein synthesis at rest in that same trial. Watch out for: that trial matched the drinks on amino acids, not on grams of protein, and used whey hydrolysate specifically — not every whey product, including ours, is hydrolysate.
Casein: best for, what the evidence shows, watch out for
Best for: a slow-release protein dose before a long gap without food, most often studied at bedtime. What the evidence shows: the 2017 International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand on protein states that pre-sleep casein intake of 30-40 g increases overnight muscle protein synthesis and metabolic rate, without affecting fat breakdown, in the research it reviewed. Watch out for: we don't sell casein, so we can't tell you how any specific casein product's label compares to that 30-40 g studied range — check the label of whatever casein product you're considering against it.
Does one build more muscle than the other?
The digestion-speed difference is well documented; a difference in muscle or strength outcome is not. We don't hold a trial directly comparing whey against casein on muscle or strength gains over weeks of training at a matched dose. The amino-acid-matched trial above measured synthesis rates in a single session, not weeks of training outcomes — it tells you casein digests slower, not that it builds less muscle over time.
Our label
Electric Tiger Whey Protein is a whey isolate/concentrate blend, 22 g of protein per 2-scoop serving. We don't carry a casein product, so this page describes the research on both proteins generally rather than steering you toward one of our own SKUs over the other.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between casein and whey protein?
Both come from milk, but whey is the fast-digesting liquid fraction and casein is the slow-digesting curd fraction. That digestion-speed difference is the main documented distinction between them; neither has been shown to outperform the other on muscle or strength gains.
Is casein whey protein?
No. They're both dairy proteins from the same source milk, but they're separated into two different fractions during cheesemaking and behave differently once digested.
Is there whey protein without casein?
Whey protein isolate and whey protein concentrate are both whey, not casein, by definition — the separation process during cheesemaking is what splits the two apart. Our blend is whey isolate and whey concentrate; it doesn't contain casein.
Is casein or whey better for building muscle?
We don't hold a head-to-head trial answering this directly. The documented difference between them is digestion speed and typical timing (whey around training, casein before sleep), not a demonstrated advantage of one over the other on muscle or strength outcomes.

- Ingestion of whey hydrolysate, casein, or soy protein isolate: effects on mixed muscle protein synthesis at rest and following resistance exercise in young men In 18 young men, whey raised blood amino acids faster than casein or soy right after a meal, at a matched amino-acid dose rather than a matched protein gram amount.
- International Society of Sports Nutrition Position Stand: protein and exercise A sports-nutrition position stand recommends 20-40 g of protein per dose, spread every 3-4 hours, and notes a workout's muscle-building window stays open for at least 24 hours after training, fading gradually rather than closing quickly.
