CoQ10 and magnesium: can you take them together?

No combination study of CoQ10 and magnesium turned up. What is known about each and how to check with a pharmacist.

By Electric Tiger Editorial

We found no human study that tested CoQ10 and magnesium together, and none in our sources reporting a problem from combining them. They are different substances: CoQ10 is a compound the body makes, magnesium is a mineral. Whether they can be taken together comes down to your own medicines and conditions, so ask a pharmacist if either applies.

What we looked for, and found

We searched PubMed on 2 October 2026 for trials of CoQ10 combined with magnesium. The results were reviews and trials in people with a medical condition, which we haven't used, and we found none reporting absorption or safety for the pair in healthy adults. We also did not find a sourced reason that they would interfere with each other. That is not proof either way, and it is the full extent of what we can say as research.

What we can cite is each on its own. The CoQ10 safety literature covers ubiquinone at 60 to 1,200 mg a day, with no dose-related stomach complaints (Hathcock 2006; an industry trade body wrote it). CoQ10 is hydrophobic and slowly absorbed (Bhagavan 2006; its authors work for a CoQ10 manufacturer). Magnesium has its own guides: magnesium glycinate dosage and its interactions.

Different things, different jobs

CoQ10 Magnesium
Type A compound made in the body; food gives about 3 to 6 mg a day (Pravst 2010) A mineral
Solubility Fat-soluble Mineral salts or chelates
Dose scale Tens to hundreds of mg Elemental mg per serving, stated per form
Substitutable? No No

Food data for CoQ10 are from Pravst 2010. Electric Tiger CoQ10 200 mg is 200 mg of coenzyme Q10 as ubiquinone with rice flour in a hypromellose capsule, one capsule a day, as low as $16.31 a bottle on subscription. It contains no magnesium, and we make no benefit claim for it.

Questions people ask

Can you take CoQ10 with magnesium? Can you take them together?

We found no study of the combination and no warning in our sources. Check with a pharmacist if you take prescription medicines, especially blood thinners, which our CoQ10 label names.

Can I take CoQ10 and magnesium glycinate together?

The same answer applies to the glycinate form: no combination study found. Our CoQ10 label directs one capsule a day, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal, and we haven't tested timing against any magnesium product.

What about CoQ10, magnesium and B2 (riboflavin), or red yeast rice and omega-3?

We have not reviewed those combinations. Multi-ingredient products need each ingredient checked at the dose on the label.

CoQ10 vs magnesium: which should I take?

They aren't alternatives. They are different substances, and our sources don't compare them. A decision like that belongs with a clinician.

Do CoQ10 and magnesium have benefits when combined?

We found no trial of the combination to report. What trials of CoQ10 alone found, and the dose gaps, are in the research review.

What else should I check about CoQ10?

CoQ10 and medications and how much to take.
